The nursery in town identified the plant as Arum Italicum Pictum (Lords and Ladies). It comes up in the spring, blooms and then dies back till fall, where it re-emerges and has a large spike of red berries. That's why I thought it had died last year. They recommend you plant with hostas that can tolerate some sun so that when the hostas die back, the Arum just is getting started again. Weird! Thank you to daughter, Olivia, who works at the Nursery in town.
