"Why I can't always give customers what they want" or "Why I sometimes sew my finger to a quilt"

Sometimes I can't give a customer what they have their hearts set on. This is one of those times. She wanted an all over design done in daisies. As you can see, this is an antique quilt. It is all hand pieced and has not a square piece of fabric in it. The daisy blocks average somewhere around 13 inches and the white blocks average somewhere around 15 1/2 inches per block. Now that's 2 1/2 full inches I have to work in on every block, making the overall all work in fabric several inches. The sides are not straight either. Though antique quilts are indeed a treasure, they can often be very difficult to quilt especially with an all over design. Now all that fullness has to be worked in by scooching and pushing and pulling while keeping one's fingers very close to the needle. Having sewn my finger to a quilt 3 different times, I was very nervous with this one and am glad it is finished. Still, I wish I could have made a more beautiful quilting job for her. I was able to plop in a few daisies in the white blocks so I hope she will be happy.

  9. You did a fabulous job! I would have run away terrified. :)
A friend once had me quilt a cheater cloth quilt that her great aunt had started hand quilting. She wanted all the long thread runs and puckers left in so I just did a meander and sewed those puckers and threads down! She loves it now that she can use it and it still is her Auntie's quilt.
